QUEER FOLK/POP DUO “THE SCARLET COAST” RETURN WITH CHRISTMAS OFFERING “WINTERGREEN”
The Scarlet Coast return, hot on the trail of their August debut “Sittin’ On Top Of The Pines”, with a new Christmas offering, “Wintergreen”
Queer Folk/Pop duo The Scarlet Coast are back just in time to save Christmas with their new release “Wintergreen” featuring six original Christmas-inspired songs woven together with aural interludes into ‘a story told through sound.’ This lofty effort is the second major release this year from this queer musical duo.
Much in the tradition of Christmas for the LGBTQIA community, the spirit of “Wintergreen” was created by bringing together the band’s musical chosen families and spotlights the talents of artists they love, including up-and-coming singer/songwriter Xander Corbett providing vocals and keys on the first single “Footsteps”, to longtime friend and musical companion Gretchen Bonaduce who provides her ethereal vocals on “Christmas Lights,” as well as the guitar stylings and rich vocals of Rudy Ruzicska on the haunting “Blood Red.”
“I wanted the record to have that late-fall/early-winter Christmas wintertime dark vibe. I love that time of the year when everything inside of us and the world changes and we really wanted to sink our teeth into that time of year artistically.” said The Scarlet Coast’s Michael Van London. “It’s really dark and beautiful and I hope this album translates to that.”
Keeping it real and true to the season, themes on the album range from disillusionment with the holiday (“Home For Christmas”) to the loneliness and heartbreak that can get overwhelming at this time of year (“Almost” & “Blood Red”,) to the season’s unavoidable joy and wonderment (“Christmas Lights”) and comes to a close with redemption and hope as we look towards spring (“Footsteps” & “Mothers & Fathers”.)
“For a lot of people – ourselves included and definitely in the LGBTQIA community – Christmas can be a time of strife. I wanted to capture that and make that uncomfortable feeling listenable,” continued Van London. “I told my hairstylist I had made a Christmas album and she was like (smiles) ‘oh cool!’ But I added it was pretty sad and she was like (frown) ‘Awww…’ – but I assured her it was really pretty too!” added TSC’s David Johnson.
Wintergreen is now available on all streaming platforms and as a compact disc through Bandcamp.
